Santa Pola is an old fishing village, still with a large active fishing port. Santa Pola is located just south of Alicante and has approximately 35,000 inhabitants. In summer its population is tribled due to the many tourists. 90% of the tourists are Spanish, so in spite of the many tourists you do not experience the city as overrun by tourists, just full of life. And the Spanish identity is still quite authentic. The many Spanish tourists is seeking the town because the climate point is a true gem. This is because the town is surrounded by mountains and large salt lakes. The mountains make for a very dry and mild climate, and the salt lakes makes for a healthy and health rewarding air. The beach is very child friendly; you have to get out far before it gets deep, and there are almost no waves, because the town is located in a bay. The sandy beach has Blue Flag and lifeguards and is cleaned and torn every night of the season. It is also totally free from stones - and free of both sharks and stinging jellyfish that otherwise plagues many Spanish coasts.
